London - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - Italian & Pizza
Not a fan of chains, I've shied away from Pizza Express as it always seemed to me to be an Americanised version of an Italian restaurant - far removed from little family-run shops where Uncle Luigi welcomes you at the door whilst Mama Rosa neads the dough for your woodfire oven pizza.
So the thought of cloning a good idea and spreading it around the city makes me want to run a mile. But I am now a little compromised. I had this amazing pizza in there on a cold and rancid Saturday afternoon - it was called 'Theo's Favorita' and was a tradintional oval-shaped base (I liked as it wasn't the cookie-cutter circle you'd expect), had a great tomato base with roasted cherry tomatoes, fresh blobs of mozzarella but not too much, torn pieces of Parma ham, black olives and peppery rocket. It was about £10 but it really was so yummy I've caught myself thinking how good it is that with so many chains around London I am comfortingly close to one wherever I am. Only thing lacking is the service in here. I'm sorry Uncle Luigi and Mamma Rosa!!
